Feature: Rolex Releases Its New GMT-Master II at W&W

The speculation was rife, the teasers hinted at it, and, yes, Rolex have indeed released a rather fresh-looking GMT-Master II in a brand-new colour combo at this year’s Watches & Wonders.

Destined to be called ‘the Sprite’ by those who love giving their Rolex watches a nickname, this right-hander (the crown and date window are on the left) features a green and black bezel in the now-customary Cerachrom and runs on the calibre 3285, like existing GMTs in the collection—so no new movement. That said, the 3285 was only released in 2018 so no surprise there.

Unusually, it comes on both an Oyster and Jubilee bracelet when previous GMTs have introduced the former followed by the latter at a later stage.

Aside from that, it’s really business as usual for this all-steel GMT-Master II, with a Superlative Chronometer certification, 100 metres (330 feet) water resistance, Triplock winding crown, and a Cyclops lens on the crystal, as well as the second time zone, which is what the GMT was first made for when it was designed for Pan-Am pilots in the 1950s.

Rolex called it an ’unexpected’ version, but we’re not sure about that, aside from the fact that it's right-hander. A few people guessed that Rolex would bring out a watch with this colour combo.

What we are sure of is that anyone who gets hold of one of these is fortunate indeed. Like all Rolex GMT-Masters it’s set to be one of the hottest luxury watches around.
